In a surprising box office upset, Jason Statham’s action thriller, “A Working Man”, claimed the No. 1 spot over the weekend, dethroning Disney’s live-action Snow White, which suffered a steep 66% drop in its second week.
According to studio estimates, A Working Man debuted with $15.2 million, exceeding expectations and signaling Statham’s continued box office draw despite mixed reviews.
Directed by David Ayer and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, A Working Man reunites Statham and Ayer after their previous collaboration on The Beekeeper, which grossed $162 million globally in 2024.
In his latest role, Statham plays a construction worker with a military past who becomes entangled in a high-stakes rescue mission. While audiences gave the film a modest “B” CinemaScore, its solid debut highlights Statham’s bankability in the action genre.
Meanwhile, Disney’s Snow White, directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler as the titular princess, continued its downward trajectory. The film grossed $14.2 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $68.3 million and global earnings to $144.1 million after two weeks.
With a production budget exceeding $250 million, analysts suggest the film needs to gross at least $500 million worldwide to break even—a benchmark that now seems increasingly out of reach.
The decline of Snow White has been attributed to mixed reviews, audience dissatisfaction, and negative buzz surrounding its visuals and behind-the-scenes controversies. The film was initially expected to rejuvenate theaters after a slow start to 2025 but has instead become one of Disney’s most notable financial disappointments in recent years.
Elsewhere at the box office, several new releases made modest debuts. The faith-based film The Chosen: The Last Supper earned $11.5 million from 2,235 theaters, while Blumhouse’s horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, starring Danielle Deadwyler, brought in $9.4 million from 2,842 locations.
A24’s horror-comedy Death of a Unicorn, featuring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, collected $5.8 million from 3,050 theaters.
One standout performer was Studio Ghibli’s 1997 classic Princess Mononoke, which grossed $4 million across just 347 IMAX screens during its limited re-release. The film’s success underscores enduring interest in Hayao Miyazaki’s work and came as fans celebrated new AI tools inspired by Studio Ghibli’s animation style.
Looking ahead, Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated Minecraft: The Movie is set to open next weekend and is expected to dominate the box office with its appeal to family audiences.
Industry analysts hope it will provide much-needed momentum for theaters after an underwhelming first quarter of 2025 that saw box office revenue fall 11% compared to the same period in 2024.
As Hollywood grapples with declining ticket sales and shifting audience preferences, A Working Man’s unexpected success serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of action-driven storytelling anchored by reliable stars like Jason Statham.
