Johnny Depp has officially begun filming his first major Hollywood project in years, marking a significant return to the industry after a period of personal and professional turbulence.
Production is underway in Spain for the Lionsgate thriller “Day Drinker”, directed by Marc Webb and co-starring Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline.
The film, which reunites Depp and Cruz for the fourth time, follows the story of a private yacht bartender (Cline) whose life takes a dramatic turn after encountering a mysterious guest played by Depp.
Their fates become entangled with a criminal figure portrayed by Cruz, setting off a chain of unexpected events. The supporting cast includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
Day Drinker is being shot along the scenic coasts of Spain, with production led by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, known for the John Wick franchise, alongside Adam Kolbrenner and screenwriter Zach Dean.
The project is seen as Depp’s most prominent Hollywood role since his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, which led to a hiatus from mainstream American productions.
Director Marc Webb, recognized for “500 Days of Summer” and “The Amazing Spider-Man”, expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting the strength of the cast and the film’s thrilling narrative. Lionsgate has released a first-look image of Depp in character, signaling the actor’s high-profile comeback.
Depp’s recent work has largely been in European cinema, including the French film “Jeanne du Barry” and his directorial effort “Modi”, but “Day Drinker” marks a return to the Hollywood mainstream.
The film is slated for a 2026 release and is expected to generate significant attention as Depp reclaims his place in the spotlight.
