Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “A Minecraft Movie” has stunned the film industry with a record-breaking global opening weekend, earning $301 million in just three days.

Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks, the film adaptation of the iconic video game has become the third highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far, trailing only “Captain America: Brave New World” and China’s animated hit “Ne Zha 2”.

The movie amassed $157 million domestically and $144 million internationally, surpassing expectations and breaking the record for the highest opening weekend for a video game adaptation.

It dethroned 2023's “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, which previously held the title with $146 million during its debut weekend.

This success comes at a critical time for Hollywood, as the industry struggles to recover from recent box office slumps. The film’s $150 million production budget meant it needed a strong start to break even, but its rapid earnings have already doubled that figure.

Analysts predict “A Minecraft Movie” could reach $1 billion globally, with projections suggesting it might surpass Super Mario Bros.’ $1.36 billion total.

Despite mixed reviews from critics—earning a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes—the audience response has been overwhelmingly positive, with an 87% approval rating. This mirrors the trajectory of other successful video game adaptations, where fan enthusiasm outweighs critical reception.

The movie’s appeal extends beyond North America, with strong performances in key markets like the UK ($19.9 million), China ($14.5 million), and Mexico ($11.2 million). Its success in China is particularly notable, as it becomes the top-grossing video game adaptation in the country over the past five years.

Featuring a family-friendly narrative of four outcasts navigating the blocky Overworld, “A Minecraft Movie” has resonated with audiences of all ages.

Its star-studded cast and nostalgic nods to the beloved game have driven fans to theaters in droves, providing much-needed momentum for Hollywood as it heads into a competitive summer season.
