Tesla has announced a recall of 46,176 Cybertrucks in the U.S. after identifying a manufacturing defect that causes exterior trim panels to detach while driving.

The issue, tied to an adhesive insufficiently resistant to environmental conditions like moisture and temperature fluctuations, poses a risk of loose parts falling onto roadways, potentially endangering other drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) flagged the defect in a filing, urging immediate action to mitigate crash hazards.

Defect Details and Safety Concerns

The recall focuses on the Cybertruck’s sail appliqué (a cant rail assembly near the truck bed), which may separate due to adhesive failure. Tesla confirmed that the flaw stems from a production error during vehicle assembly.

While no crashes or injuries have been reported, the NHTSA warned that detached panels could create road debris, increasing collision risks.

Free Repairs and Owner Instructions

Tesla will replace the faulty trim panels at no cost through its service centers, beginning in June 2024.

Owners will receive notification letters by mail and are advised to contact Tesla directly to schedule repairs.

The company emphasized that vehicles remain safe to drive until fixed, provided the trim remains intact.

This marks the second major recall for the Cybertruck since its late 2023 launch, following a December fix for accelerator pedal issues.

The electric pickup, central to Tesla’s innovation brand, has faced scrutiny over production delays and quality control.

Analysts note the recall could strain consumer confidence amid growing competition in the EV truck market.

Why It Matters

The recall underscores ongoing challenges in Tesla’s manufacturing processes, particularly for its flagship Cybertruck. As regulators intensify scrutiny of automotive safety, the move highlights the balance between rapid innovation and quality assurance in the EV sector.
