A Southwest Airlines flight on Thursday mistakenly attempted to take off from a taxiway instead of a runway at Orlando International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The incident occurred at 9:30 a.m. local time as the plane, bound for Albany, New York, began its takeoff roll on the taxiway. The crew had misidentified the surface, prompting an air traffic controller to cancel the takeoff clearance.
No injuries were reported, and passengers were later transferred to another aircraft with a new crew.
The FAA confirmed that the taxiway runs parallel to the runway, which led to the confusion. "The taxiway is not designed for takeoffs," the FAA stated, adding that no other aircraft were involved. The agency has launched an investigation into the incident.
This marks yet another mishap in a series of recent aviation incidents, including a fatal collision earlier this year between an American Airlines flight and a military helicopter that claimed 67 lives.
In a separate incident, a Delta Air Lines plane crash-landed with a high descent rate, resulting in significant.
