Samsung Electronics has announced the sudden passing of its co-chief executive officer, Han Jong-Hee, who died of cardiac arrest at the age of 63 on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

Han, a pivotal figure in the company's success, had been overseeing Samsung's consumer electronics and mobile devices division.
Han Jong-hee joined Samsung Electronics in 1988 and rose through the ranks during his 37-year tenure. He played a crucial role in maintaining Samsung's position as the world's leading TV brand for 19 consecutive years. In 2022, Han was appointed vice chairman and co-CEO, leading the Device Experience (DX) division, which encompassed Samsung's TV, home appliances, and smartphone businesses.
Born in 1962, Han earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Inha University before joining Samsung. His expertise in the TV business and his innovative approach were instrumental in Samsung's technological leadership. Han was central in rolling out Samsung's LED TVs and spearheading other innovations that solidified the company's market position.
During his tenure as co-CEO, Han faced significant challenges in the tech industry. At an annual meeting with investors last week, which he chaired, Han apologized for the performance of Samsung stock and warned of a difficult 2025 due to uncertainties surrounding major economies' economic policies.
He also expressed Samsung's intention to pursue "meaningful" mergers and acquisitions to support the company's growth, particularly in the semiconductor sector.
Samsung paid tribute to Han in an internal message, acknowledging his dedication and contributions to the company's growth amid challenging business environments. The company expressed its deepest condolences to Han's family and loved ones during this difficult time.
As of now, Samsung Electronics has not announced a successor to Han Jong-hee. The company's other co-CEO, Jun Young-hyun, who oversees the chip business, remains in his position.
Han Jong-hee's passing marks the end of an era for Samsung Electronics. His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on the company and the consumer electronics industry as a whole.
As Samsung navigates the challenges ahead, Han's legacy of innovation and determination will undoubtedly continue to influence the company's future endeavors.
