Russian President Vladimir Putin's aide, Yuri Ushakov, has rejected the temporary ceasefire proposal put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Ushakov stated that Russia is only interested in a long-term peaceful settlement that takes into account Russia's interests and concerns.
In an interview with Russia-1 TV channel, Ushakov described the proposed 30-day ceasefire as "nothing more than a temporary respite for the Ukrainian military". He emphasized that Russia's goal is a durable peace resolution rather than actions that merely simulate peaceful intentions.
The U.S. and Ukraine had previously agreed on a 30-day ceasefire plan during talks in Saudi Arabia, which the Trump administration is now presenting to Russian officials. Trump has been advocating for a swift peace in Ukraine, citing concerns over the extensive destruction, loss of life, and the significant financial burden on American taxpayers.
President Trump stated on Wednesday that "it's up to Russia now" to agree to the ceasefire, suggesting that such an agreement could be "80 percent of the way to getting this horrible bloodbath" ended.
However, Putin is expected to provide further comments on the ceasefire proposal later today, potentially offering "more specific and substantive assessments".
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed determination to work quickly with partners towards peace and security guarantees, emphasizing the need for Russia's genuine readiness to end the war rather than deceive.
As tensions continue, the rejection of the temporary ceasefire by Putin's aide highlights the ongoing challenges in finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
