Mexico has formally recognized Palestine as a sovereign state, marking a significant diplomatic move. President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first Jewish and female leader, accepted the credentials of Palestinian Ambassador Nadya Rasheed during a ceremony at the National Palace on March 21, 2025.
This historic decision marks a significant shift in Mexico's foreign policy and aligns the country with the growing international consensus on Palestinian statehood. President Sheinbaum, known for her consistent advocacy for Palestinian rights, used the occasion to denounce the violence faced by Palestinians and reaffirm Mexico's long-standing support for a two-state solution.
The recognition comes at a crucial time, as tensions in the region remain high. Mexico has joined South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which accuses Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians under the UN's 1948 Genocide Convention.
Ambassador Rasheed expressed profound gratitude for Mexico's recognition, describing it as a courageous stance amid ongoing global tensions. The ceremony was marked by a symbolic photograph of President Sheinbaum and Ambassador Rasheed standing together, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the event.
This move builds upon the groundwork laid by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who elevated the Palestinian mission in Mexico to embassy status in June 2023. However, it wasn't until President Sheinbaum's administration that Mexico officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign state.
As of March 2025, the State of Palestine is now recognized by 147 of the 193 UN member states, representing over 75% of all UN member states. Mexico's decision could potentially influence other nations, particularly in the Americas, to follow suit in recognizing Palestinian statehood.
The recognition of Palestine by Mexico, a significant player in international diplomacy, sends a strong message of support for Palestinian self-determination and could have far-reaching implications for the peace process in the Middle East.
