Japan clinched its spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, defeating Bahrain 2-0 at Saitama Stadium to become the first team globally to secure qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament.

Second-half goals from Daichi Kamada and Takefusa Kubo sealed the victory, propelling the Samurai Blue to the top of Asia’s Group C and extending their streak to eight consecutive World Cup appearances.

Japan joins co-hosts the United States, Canada, and Mexico in the finals, set to kick off in June 2026.

“The players showed incredible determination, and the fans’ support was vital,” said Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu. “We trusted our process, and the goals came. Now, we aim to win our remaining three qualifiers and grow stronger as a unit.”

Japan’s dominant qualifying campaign, featuring six wins in seven matches, underscores their status as Asia’s top-ranked team.

Australia Closes In on World Cup Spot

Earlier in the day, second-place Australia moved closer to securing its seventh World Cup berth with a commanding 5-1 victory over Indonesia in Sydney.

The Socceroos capitalized on a missed penalty by Indonesia’s Kevin Diks in the eighth minute, with Martin Boyle converting a spot kick moments later to open the scoring. Nishan Velupillay, Jackson Irvine (twice), and Lewis Miller added goals, while Indonesia’s Ole Romeny netted a consolation strike.

The match marked Patrick Kluivert’s debut as Indonesia’s coach, though his side remains fourth in Group C.

Qualifying Format and Next Steps

Asia’s third-round qualifiers feature three groups of six teams, with the top two from each advancing directly to the World Cup. Third- and fourth-place finishers will enter a playoff round for two additional spots.

Japan’s early qualification relieves pressure ahead of September fixtures, while Australia sits five points clear of third-place Saudi Arabia in Group C.

Japan’s historic qualification highlights their footballing consistency, while Australia’s rout reinforces their regional dominance.

With Asian teams eyeing a record number of World Cup slots in 2026, the race for remaining berths intensifies, promising high-stakes clashes in the months ahead.
