Germany has strongly criticized Israel’s decision to formally recognize 13 Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the move a direct obstacle to peace. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Office stated on Monday that the approval “actively undermines the two-state solution” and fuels an “expansive settlement policy” in the contested territory.

The remarks came after Israel’s security cabinet voted to legitimize the settlements, a step likely to escalate tensions in the region. When pressed on whether Berlin would take diplomatic action in response, the spokesperson declined to specify potential measures.

The West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 war, is home to nearly 3 million Palestinians and over 500,000 Israeli settlers. The international community largely considers settlements illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this. Germany, a staunch ally of Israel, has repeatedly urged restraint in settlement expansion, warning that it jeopardizes prospects for a negotiated peace with Palestinians.

The latest decision comes amid heightened violence in the West Bank and stalled peace efforts. Critics argue that further settlement approvals entrench Israeli control over land Palestinians seek for a future state, while Israeli officials defend the move as a necessary step for security and development.

As diplomatic friction grows, Germany’s condemnation reflects broader European concerns over Israel’s hardline policies under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. The EU has previously called for a halt to settlement activity, though divisions persist on how to enforce consequences.
