Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a snap federal election in Canada, scheduled for April 28, 2025. The decision comes just nine days after Carney assumed office, replacing Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party.

Carney's call for an election is primarily driven by the ongoing trade war with the United States and concerns over President Donald Trump's policies and threats to Canadian sovereignty.

"We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," Carney stated during his announcement.

The election campaign, which will last 37 days, is expected to focus heavily on Canada's relationship with the United States and each candidate's ability to handle the challenges posed by the Trump administration.

Carney will face off against Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who has been leading in opinion polls since mid-2023, although recent data suggests the race is tightening.

The election campaign is expected to center on key issues, including: the economic ramifications of US-imposed tariffs and Canada's retaliatory measures; safeguarding Canadian sovereignty against perceived encroachment; and diversifying trade partnerships to lessen reliance on the US.

Carney, leveraging his extensive financial background as the former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, aims to position himself as the leader best equipped to steer the Canadian economy through these turbulent times.

Carney has outlined his vision for a unified Canadian economy, emphasizing the removal of internal trade barriers and the implementation of a middle-class tax cut. Additionally, he pledged to continue diversifying Canada's trade partnerships, reducing its dependence on the United States and fostering greater economic resilience.

The election, taking place after nine years of Liberal rule, represents a pivotal moment for Canada's future. As the country faces growing uncertainty on the international stage, the outcome of the April 28 vote will determine Canada's approach to trade, sovereignty, and its relationship with its most important ally.
