Air India has become the first airline in Asia to integrate Apple AirTag into its baggage-tracking system, offering passengers a groundbreaking solution for locating their checked-in luggage.
The new feature allows customers using Apple devices to track their baggage in real time through the airline’s mobile app and website, enhancing efficiency and minimizing the stress of lost or delayed luggage.
The integration builds upon Air India’s existing baggage-tracking capabilities, which leverage real-time data from airports to provide updates on baggage status. Passengers can access tracking information via the "My Trips" section of the app or website immediately after check-in.
Additionally, travelers can initiate tracking by scanning the barcode on their baggage receipts. For those using Apple AirTags, the airline now enables seamless location sharing through Apple’s ‘Find My’ app, allowing passengers to pinpoint their luggage’s location with precision.
Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Air India, emphasized the airline’s commitment to innovation: “As we transform into a world-class global airline, we are excited to offer our guests an innovative option to help locate their baggage in case it does not arrive at the destination on schedule.
The integration of Apple AirTag with our real-time tracking system is a key step in enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency.”
If a passenger’s baggage equipped with an AirTag fails to arrive at its destination, they can report the issue at Air India’s Baggage Counter and share the AirTag’s location link generated from the ‘Find My’ app.
This link is then associated with a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) filed through the airline’s Customer Support Portal on its app or website.
Authorized airport teams use this link to locate and reunite the baggage with its owner as quickly as possible. To ensure privacy and security, location sharing automatically ends once the baggage is recovered or expires after seven days.
Air India transports over 100 million pieces of luggage annually, with more than 99.6% arriving on time alongside passengers. For the small percentage of delayed items due to flight misconnection or airport system issues, this integration aims to expedite recovery and reduce inconvenience for travelers.
As part of its broader digital transformation strategy, Air India continues to set new standards for customer-centric innovation in aviation.
